EXCELLENT!! I needed to make this dairy free, and so I used almond milk instead, and I prefer palm oil shortening instead of veg. shortening. I also wanted to serve this as a trifle, so I broiled it in a 9x13 pan, cutting cake into cubes and layered in the trifle dish with strawberries. I served the whipped foam on the side. I also actually liked it topped with sour cream mixed with maple syrup, instead of whipped cream. Mmmmm. I just printed and added this to "my family'southward favorite recipe binder." Thanks for this recipe!

Perfect shortcake base of operations. I used butter in place of shortening and did not use the melted butter. Information technology was a great compromise between the two standard types - biscuit vs. spongecake. This was great. Quick, easy, skilful texture and not too sweet. I served it with fresh berries and bootleg sweetened whipped cream. Kids and adults loved it. I will make information technology over again.
04/14/2013
I followed the recipe exactly equally written (though I did accept to broil an extra ten-15 minutes as well before it was set up in the middle) and this was a FANTASTIC shortcake recipe! Nosotros had guests over, and all 5 of u.s.a. LOVED this recipe. Succulent (particularly with some fresh fabricated whipped cream - YUMM!)

This shortcake was fabulous - like a slightly moist/spongy biscuit - only perfect. Was hesitant to try it considering it seemed way too simple, but I volition probably never employ another recipe for shortcake. Made information technology exatly as written, as other reviewers mentioned did have to broil about ten minutes longer. I cutting the cake into 8 pie shaped wedges which I cutting in one-half horizontally. Mashed some berries with a fiddling truvia to make a "sauce" and then sliced the remaining berries with no sugar. I didn't use whipped foam and instead put a small dollop of plain greek yogurt on the top. Divine!

I'k 71 and this is but like my mom and dad made. So easy to brand. Information technology does take a few minutes longer to broil, merely sure non complaining. Made it twice in two nights. Going to show my young granddaughter, who loves to bake, how to make it. Thank you for sharing.
02/10/2013
This was succulent and very easy to brand. People were licking their plates. Thank you for posting this recipe.
08/04/2013
Practice not recommend this one, sorry. If you make it, I would recommend butter only - I used 1/2 butter 1/2 shortening but it was yet no good. Information technology does need to bake longer than the recipe calls for as well. The texture was pretty good though. Flavour with the berries & whip: eh - bleh to me....
04/02/2013
Loved this! The shortcake was tender and soft and a trivial spongy, merely right! Not very sweet on its own, which was good since the strawberries were sweet. :) Quick, easy, and will save y'all a trip to the grocery store next time y'all want a strawberry and shortcake, will never buy the store fabricated shortcakes again!
07/29/2014
Texturally, this is exactly what I want in a shortcake. A picayune coarse to soak in fruit juices, and a overnice rise in the pan with a gold peak. For me and hubs, it lacked in the flavor department fifty-fifty after the fact I added a teaspoon of vanilla extract. It just wasn't sweet enough. With that said, this recipe is as close as I take establish to being a good shortcake base. It definitely beats the store bought spongy cakes. I'll attempt it with butter next time and run across if that makes a difference. As for the bake time, it was definitely understated in the recipe as others have noted. It required an additional fifteen minutes to yield a beautiful cake.
04/27/2013
Great recipe, very good and even better because it's and then piece of cake. We had very sweet strawberries that were locally grown so I skipped the carbohydrate in them and it was still great. Did I mention how quick and piece of cake this is to make? Dearest that!
04/24/2013
Perfect texture! Loved information technology!
03/31/2013
I made this recipe exactly every bit written, all the same I had to bake this near 10 or 15 minutes longer than stated for the toothpick to come up out clean. Oven temps. vary though and then that was non a large deal. This recipe was very adept. I chose this recipe because it has less carbohydrate in the cake batter than others similar information technology making information technology a footling less sweet than most brusque cakes. However this was very good for my diabetic husband, every bit for me, I only poured more sugar on my strawberries. With the strawberries and whipped cream tastes sugariness and has an old fashioned feel about it. Excellent recipe!
06/01/2015
Loved it! I used butter instead of shortening and organic soy milk, thought information technology turned out smashing. No extra butter or sugar on the finished dessert, just loads of awesome fresh picked homegrown berries!
01/04/2014
This was super easy to brand and delicious ! The cake had a good texture, not as well dumbo. The shortcake was a little patently so next time I am going to add together a little vanilla extract in it. I cooked the cake for a little longer than suggested and turned out just right. I made this block for my boyfriend and we both went back for more than! It was definitely a hitting.
01/05/2014
I love this shortcake recipe. ! My boyfriend is not a dessert person, only he was very impressed by this one.
07/twenty/2013
This was astonishing !!! Anybody loved it. And then easy to make and soooo very moist. I also broiled information technology a few minutes longer -- maybe 24-25 minutes in all but I accept a small oven and fabricated two cakes so I don't know if that mattered. I used much less carbohydrate in the strawberries but because I like it that way.
09/xi/2015
this is the first time i try this at home and its pretty good actually i added 1 egg to the recipe, ane tsp vanilla extract, instead of all white sugar i mixed white and brwn and used olive cookin oil instead of the veg. shortening i didnt ise butter between the layers the cake information technology cocky with out the strawberry is non sweet but when u add together the strawbery for me thats the perfect sweetness level " non to sweet but sugariness enough" probably next fourth dimension sick exercise some modifications in the block it self but information technology worth the endeavour!
06/22/2014
This is exactly what I was hoping for in a strawberry shortcake! It has that old-fashioned, not sweet, blistering powder flavour, gustatory modality that yous look. I followed the recipe exactly, didnt need to change a thing for the cake, however for the strawberries, I used less sugar. The blistering time was perfect also. My family unit loved it and I know that I will plow to this recipe once again and again.
08/02/2013
Dense, weighty, spongy...delicious. I will return to this recipe. I added sicilia di fiore orange oil to the batch too...yum!
02/26/2014
Made recipe as is and loved information technology! Perfect go-to but I feel you can hands alter it to your needs! Well washed
07/24/2013
cracking recipe, nice old school shortcake. tasted awesome!!!! i'm not that much of a bakery but this was easy and really good. i like to boom the strawberries to go lots of juice.
05/29/2013
Fabricated recipe exactly as stated. Broiled for 22 minutes. Perfect shortcake-dense, not overly dry. Great summer dessert.
06/07/2013
Delicious!!! and super piece of cake too!!!
06/02/2014
I liked the consistency of the block only it had too much baking powder. Likewise I would use butter instead of vegetable shortening. It has potential.
05/17/2014
Something is missing from this. Other than a soft, dense texture (which I idea was good), it's actually lacking in flavor--I even added vanilla to the concoction. I used salted butter which is probably why I found this to exist too salty. I programme on keeping this in my recipe box, only will try to tweak information technology so it's more flavorful.
06/30/2013
I fabricated this for my stepmother's birthday dinner and everyone loved it! I made a couple of changes to brand information technology a touch on healthier and fifty-fifty more flavorful! I used one-half white flour and half whole spelt flour, which is highly nutritious and has a mild, sugariness flavor that is closer to white flour than whole wheat. I used 1/4 cup sugar in the strawberries, which worked out great, and I used half the salt it called for. I added a beaten egg and lessened the amount of milk, and so it would agree together better. I as well did non put butter on the layers- I felt that butter and whipped foam were overkill in the heavy dairy section. Also, I found that the block was thick and sturdy enough that I was able to cut it into iii layers instead of just 2. I put strawberries, whipped cream and banana slices in between each layer and on top. The bananas added a yummy, sugariness touch. I tin can't expect to make this over again!
05/26/2014
This was my first attempt at dwelling house made strawberry shortcake and it turned our fabled! My mom said it was the best shortcake she'south e'er had! We didn't have vegetable shortening so I used about half-dozen tbsp of cold unsalted butter instead. I topped information technology with fresh, lightly strawberries and the Piece of cake Whipped Foam recipe from this site. I'll never buy those spongecakes again! So skilful!
05/26/2013
Followed the recipe exactly and absolutely loved it! Perfect sweetness for shortcake. Much better texture than strawberry shortbread. It soaks upwardly more strawberry juice because of this likewise. I cooked mine xx minutes and it probably could take used a little longer but I prefer it a little more on the spongy side. Definitely volition be making this again!
08/12/2013
I besides substituted butter for shortening and information technology was delicious. I cut the sugar for the berries in half. I served this with homemade whipped foam. This recipe is a keeper!
06/23/2013
This cake is more moist than any that I've made before. It is delicious and was a hit with my Dad. He said it was the best he had ever tasted.
07/06/2013
Oh my goodness!! My husband raved and raved almost this i. I merely used one/2 cup of sugar with the strawberries. I sliced berries, and added sugar and then refrigerated while I made dinner and information technology turned out plenty sugariness enough for us. This is what we call at my house, a "do over"! Never ownership spongey cake always over again.
05/31/2013
Lamentable, I will never brand this once again. I think butter would have been better. The cake was so "white". Volition become dorsum to my Better Homes & Gardens old cookbook for the one I used to make.
03/23/2017
I followed the directions exactly equally written. It was delicious!
05/10/2014
Gustation was good merely cooking fourth dimension was way too brusque! First 1 was baked five min longer than recipe stated and was raw in the heart. Second endeavour I used a ix" pan and baked it for more than double the time...basically until the edges only started to colour. Family loved the finished product (using the 2nd made cake). I would make again but be certain to cook it longer!
05/26/2015
I'd have taken a flick, but the family devoured this! I used 1/two butter and i/2 shortening and skipped the extra butter layer because I didn't desire the butter to be overpowering. I cut the block in half and put the strawberries between the ii layers and topped with homemade vanilla whipped cream; not really a modification just a thing of visual preference. The texture was great and the taste was wonderful. I did have to bake longer than the recipe, so make sure and test for doneness before setting to absurd! Thanks for the great recipe.
07/04/2016
Finally an old-fashioned recipe like my husband and I enjoyed in our youth (long agone). It's as well pretty quick and easy--a winner!
08/05/2017
I made this for my firm following the recipe because, you know, carbohydrate and carbs, YUM! I also made this for my parents house but used a low carb blistering mix and Splenda for the cake and tossed the strawberries with a carbohydrate free vanilla syrup (like you employ for java) considering, y'all know, carbs and saccharide, booooo! I did enjoy some at both houses and didn't really feel that guilty near it. Both were equally as delicious and I couldn't really tell the difference.
07/05/2014
I accept used this recipe twice now. The second time I used proficient sometime fashioned lard that I get from my butcher. I use it for my pie crusts as well. The family unit really liked it ameliorate with the lard. A great simple recipe to do with the grandchildren! And then easy that the 3 twelvemonth old tin even do it! Thank you for the delicious nutrient and love!

I had not broiled in YEARS. Made recipe as written and it was perfect. Loved that it'south not likewise sweet and it has the perfect consistency to hold the juice. This is definitely a keeper. As others have said, it did take longer to broil.
03/thirteen/2019
Simple and piece of cake to make. At 6300 ft above sea level, I had to bake it between ten-15 minutes longer.
05/28/2014
The shortcake turned out to be very doughy and dense.
07/xiii/2014
Bully shortcake/shortbread nix too sugariness.
05/04/2013
I thought it was very heavy and chewy. Generally OK season, but non very sweet. Won't make once again.
06/08/2017
I really liked the recipe. I did make changes to it. I used butter instead of shortening; used half the amount of sugar on the strawberries and next time will employ even less. I baked it in an 8" foursquare pan and finally, I didn't employ butter later baking. It didn't need it. I similar the consistency of the shortcake and had a really skillful flavor.
02/25/2017
I couldn't decide if I liked it or not. I read many of the reviews earlier making it. I decided to utilise butter vs shortening because many reviewers who fabricated it with shortening seemed to say it was tasteless due to the lack of butter. I used unsalted butter and half of the amount of salt (per other reviewers who said it tasted off, perhaps due to the amount of salt and the amount of backing powder). I added two tsp of vanilla. I liked that it wasn't very sweetness. I liked that it tasted like a big, huge Bisquick pancake. Something nostalgic like that. Just there was notwithstanding something missing. Also, cook this until it looks about golden brownish. I allow it cook for x more minutes than recipe stated, toothpick test came out good, pulled it out and literally gooey in the eye, 3 inches! ugh. Then we ate the outer edges. :(
07/05/2017
This took 22 minutes to cook in an 8 inch pan as directed. Information technology was moist and a good texture. I liked that the recipe was simpler than some (ex utilise of milk instead of cream). Yet, it badly needed more sugar (and I do not have a sweet molar). If I get in once more, I will triple the carbohydrate. Every bit is, it is more like bread than cake.
07/13/2015
I just love a biscuity, not besides sweet shortcake. None of that sponge cake for me! This fit the pecker. Soaks up the berry juice nicely. I had to brand some modifications for dietary restrictions and ingredient availability. I used almond milk and instead of shortening I used kokosnoot oil. I added a splash of vanilla, per some other proffer and doubled the recipe, so I had to bake most twice as long as recommended. The double batch was necessary considering in addition to strawberries, I had a flat of raspberries to utilise upwardly. Raspberry shortcake is delicious, as well, it turns out and, really, why should strawberries get all the celebrity?! Thank you for sharing!
06/19/2013
This was yummy. My husband kept saying how proficient it was. I had to bake it an actress ten minutes though.
xi/10/2019
making it once more, soon!
09/12/2020
This was awesome I added vanilla ice cream & whip cream so added the strawberry sauce. information technology was a hit
06/05/2016
This tastes just similar my grandmother'due south shortcake! Crawly!
09/17/2015
I had a request from my girl-in-police force for strawberry shortcake for her altogether celebration. This was very easy to make and delicious, exactly as the recipe stated. I broiled my shortcake for 20 minutes and had a beautiful, moist biscuit to serve. Anybody commented on the delectable dessert. Cheers for sharing this please!
10/31/2014
My husband loved it
02/20/2016
best strawberry short cake ever. added vanilla pudding in between layers, so like shooting fish in a barrel to make
05/21/2020
I agree with the others who said it took MUCH longer to bake. For me it was xxx minutes at 350 degrees. That existence said, the sense of taste was FANTASTIC. It is a blend of the cake/beige types of shortcake and VERY GOOD. I will make it again, noting carefully the extra baking time needed.
05/24/2016
I should have read reviews. Agggghhh information technology was dry and tasted of baking powder. I will endeavour information technology once more and make the changes.
04/23/2017
I subbed butter for the shortening. It came out perfect, not too spongy and not likewise hard. I used round block pans and doubled it.
06/17/2018
This was the start fourth dimension I always made strawberry shortcake and I found information technology came out wonderfully! As many others have said the blistering fourth dimension was about x mins longer than indicated. I used Cool Whip instead of whipped cream merely otherwise followed the recipe exactly and will make information technology again. The texture is perfect and fifty-fifty my husband who isn't big on sweets found it to be very practiced.
03/09/2020
The only thing I did differently was split into two pans and next time I'm going to add some sweetened condensed milk to the layers.
08/31/2017
Consistency was good. I thought it was likewise salty. I will brand again merely omit the salt
06/nineteen/2016
I made this and served information technology with strawberries and blueberries together. It fabricated for a very pretty desert . I recommend that you follow directions and split information technology, toast information technology and spread it with butter. Toasting information technology gives it a much more intersecting texture and with butter lightly spread on it before adding the fruit, it is and so much better than just serving it as is. I cutting outs in wedges, carve up and toasted instead of the whole cake because it was but 3 of us and the whole affair would have been too much. This is a groovy recipe, like shooting fish in a barrel, and I will definitely exist making it again!
04/thirty/2014
Made this last night for friends and they loved information technology too. I'm not much of a cook so this was easy and I already had most of the ingredients. I alive in Colorado and I had to broil information technology an extra 10 minutes. For the strawberries I used about half a cup of sugar for two pounds. It tasted great without being too sugary. I paired this with the allrecipes whipped cream that uses sour foam. Very yum!
02/05/2017
I followed the recipe merely I had to add together an boosted 10 minutes cooking time. I besides would eliminate adding the "butter"equally directed only earlier serving the dessert. The butter is overkill and not needed. Overall, we really similar the shortcake (not too sweet).
07/08/2017
I liked information technology. I was looking for a recipe for peach shortcake. With a few modifications this hit the spot.
05/12/2017
Followed recipe, not the flaky kind of shortcakes I prefer.
04/25/2018
I was looking for a recipe with no eggs since I was all out. I used almond milk instead of dairy and did permit it bake at least 15 minutes longer to get some color. The cake had very piddling sugar and was the perfect texture for soaking upwardly all the sweetness juices from the berries. It was lovely! I volition definitely employ this equally a great base recipe for my shortcake in the future. Yummy!!
03/27/2015
Too much sugar for the strawberries, just the shortcake itself was quite squeamish!
02/19/2014
It was so succulent. I did run into trouble with the sauce. I cut up the strawberries and tossed information technology with sugar just the sugar didn't desolve properly and didn't liquify. It was just a clump of sugar and strawberries. I would recommend using less sugar, near one-half since I ended up scooping that clump of sugar out and throwing it away. I loved the shortcake. It was delicious and soft.
08/11/2019
Succulent, I followed the communication of other and used butter instead of shortening and used fresh fabricated whipped cream.
